Economics in practice · seven internships

How people decide about money, and who gets left out.

Every internship here was an economics question in disguise: present self against future self at Wealthapp, decoy pricing at Pharmint, why repayments slip in a village, why two lakh farmers cannot get a fair price. The technical ones trained the hands that build the answers.

Wealthapp Distributors

Financial modelling intern (paid)

Kolkata

A 24-month plan to move ₹1 crore from cash into equities, with a deliberate redemption delay as friction against impulse.

The problem was economics, not spreadsheets: how do people decide about money over time, and why do they act against their own interest? I designed the plan around present and future selves, built monthly-state logic with edge cases at term end, and engineered a redemption delay so loss aversion worked for the client instead of against them. Then a client-facing interface.

Bargach Finance

Microfinance field survey and operations intern

Rural microfinance, 100k+ borrowers in 5 states

Field interviews with borrowers on repayment behaviour, 75 branches analysed for risk, and the use case that became the voicebot.

I interviewed borrowers in villages about why repayments slip, analysed branch data to flag high-risk units, drew the operational flow charts, and assisted on recovery calls. That is where the idea for the voice agent came from. Interview counts differ between my documents.

Pharmint Pte Ltd, Singapore

Behavioural economics intern

Cross-border B2B pharmaceutical marketplace

Decoy pricing, anchoring and loss-aversion framing in the bulk-order flow, lifting average order value and conversions by about 3 percent.

I added a middle tier to the bulk-ordering options so institutional buyers compared against it, anchored wholesale rates against international baselines, and showed buyers the margin they were forfeiting by not stepping up a tier. Textbook behavioural economics, applied to a live checkout.

Grade 11

Pharmint Pte Ltd, Singapore

Machine learning intern, cancer transcriptomics

Six-week virtual internship

RNA-seq analysis to find gene signatures linked to hypoxia in cancer: PCA, random forests, KEGG and GSEApy pathway enrichment.

Pre-processing, differential expression analysis and predictive models on transcriptomic data, with pathway enrichment to interpret the results. The useful lesson was about limits: sample bias in genomic datasets can produce a clean result that means nothing.

Grade 11

Galamad Aerospace

AI track intern

Satellite collision risk

A classifier that sorts satellites into high, medium and low collision risk from two-line element orbital data.

Altitude, velocity, orbital period and congestion as features; a workflow from raw TLE data to risk class, with feature-importance analysis to see what actually drives the prediction.

Grade 11

MLA Office, Sikandra Rao constituency

Civic Impact Fellow

Uttar Pradesh, virtual

Cooperative models for two lakh potato farmers who could not get fair prices.

I reviewed farmer-cooperative structures to see how collective procurement, aggregation, storage and negotiation could raise price realisation, and which models could be adapted locally. Rural development as an economics problem with a policy answer.
